For over 100 years, the charm of pearls has inspired us to explore the most prestigious markets in the world, searching for the most beautiful and valuable pearls to create unique jewellery. The quality and value of pearls depend on five key factors: shape, size, colour, surface and lustre.
SHAPE: The most valuable shape is spherical, evoking the idea of perfection. Baroque pearls are equally fascinating with their distinctive irregularities.
SIZE: Each oyster produces pearls of different diameters, a fundamental factor in determining their value.
COLOUR: The colour of a pearl varies depending on the type of oyster it comes from. To assess its beauty, the pearl should be placed on a white surface, illuminated by lamps without ultraviolet rays. This allows the various shades of colour with their different nuances to be appreciated.
SURFACE: The surface of the pearl should be as smooth and polished as possible, free from imperfections or defects.
ORIENT: Orient is a technical parameter that defines the iridescence of the pearl, i.e. its ability to reflect light.
GOOD ADVICE: To preserve the lustre of pearls, we recommend not wearing them when applying cosmetics or hair styling products; clean them with a damp cotton cloth and store them in a cloth separately from other items.
COLOUR: shades ranging from white to champagne
SIZE: from 1 to 9 mm in diameter
Japanese pearls are perhaps the best known and most appreciated. They come from the Pinctada Martensii shell cultivated in Japanese bays. The size of Japanese pearls varies from 2 to a maximum of 10 mm. They are generally white in colour, with reflections ranging from cream to pink, silver to champagne
COLOUR: shades ranging from white with silver tones to yellow.
SIZE: from 8 to 22 mm in diameter.
South Sea pearls grow between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, mainly in Australia, but also in the Philippines and Indonesia. Australian pearls are produced by Pincatada Maxima, the largest species of pearl oyster, and can reach up to 25 mm in diameter, especially in the irregular shape known as “baroque”. The average diameter ranges from 8 to 22 mm and their colour varies from classic white/silver to pink or golden.
COLOUR: from pale yellow to black with green fly wing shades.
SIZE: from 8 to 20 mm in diameter.
Black pearls are a species cultivated in the Polynesian seas of Tahiti, in large black-lipped oysters – Pinctada Margaritifera – from which they derive their colour. In reality, Tahitian pearls are almost never black, but instead have a variety of colours and reflections ranging from silver grey to dark grey, emerald green, turquoise, aubergine and even the sought-after Peacock, named for its iridescent multicoloured reflections, just like peacock feathers. Their diameter varies from 8 mm to 20 mm.
COLOUR: white, pink and orange, found in all shades up to lilac, salmon and deep orange.
SIZE: from 2 to 12 mm in diameter.
Freshwater pearls are cultivated in China and are formed in freshwater molluscs in the lakes, rivers and canals of the provinces west of Shanghai. They are produced by a species of mollusc called Hyriopsis Schlegeli Cumingii, commonly known as the “triangular mollusc”. Freshwater pearls are known for their wide variety of shapes, from baroque to drop, oval and rice, and more rarely, perfectly spherical. They come in a variety of natural colours ranging from white to pink to peach, and their diameter varies from 2 mm to 12 mm.
